Whales in the Gulf of Maine have been cataloged for decades through the collaborative efforts of the Gulf of Maine Humpback Whale Catalog at the Center for Coastal Studies, the North Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalog at Allied Whale, College of the Atlantic and their contributors. Submissions are matched to these catalogs and contribute to their long-term work, thanks to a partnership with Happywhale. Humpback whales in the Gulf of Maine are named based on their fluke patterns through a long-standing community process. This whale was named for the marks on the lower right side of the tail that resembles large/tall wild animals walking along an African plain, like in Tanzania.
