Anglerfish @135715
Humpback whales in the Gulf of Maine are named based on their fluke patterns through a long-standing community process. Anglerfish was named for the markings on the left side of the tail that look like the mouth and esca (luminescent organ) of an anglerfish. This whale is known from the collaborative efforts of the Gulf of Maine Humpback Whale Catalog at the Center for Coastal Studies, the North Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalog at Allied Whale, College of the Atlantic and their contributors. Submissions are matched to these catalogs and contribute to their long-term work, thanks to a partnership with Happywhale.
