Fluke of Opal Confirmed in the catalog

Opal @45240

Whales in the Gulf of Maine have been cataloged for decades through the collaborative efforts of the Gulf of Maine Humpback Whale Catalog at the Center for Coastal Studies, the North Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalog at Allied Whale, College of the Atlantic and their contributors. Submissions are matched to these catalogs and contribute to their long-term work, thanks to a partnership with Happywhale. Humpback whales in the Gulf of Maine are named based on their fluke patterns through a long-standing community process. This whale was named for the white inclusions in the overall dark of the fluke that are like opal (mineraloid) formations in volcanic or sedimentary rocks.

The photographs and fluke identifications behind every sighting are the work of the contributing observers — the citizen scientists, naturalists and operators who logged them, each named in the underlying GBIF occurrence record. Every activity links out to its source encounters on Happywhale. Basemaps © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL).
