The name Stitches came from a scar on his dorsal -- see Kate Spencer's encounter from May 5, 2015 -- the scar looks like massive Frankenstein stitches, probably from a ship strike with a small outboard motor. Stitches is known as a male from research by NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC)
