CRC-11819 was first sighted during the SPLASH project, a collaborative humpback whale study directed by Cascadia Research Collective, outside San Francisco Bay in 2004 then off Nicaragua in 2005. More recently this whale was found by the Whales of Guerrero Research Project, to whom he or she is known as HB_178. Formerly also known as HW-MN0500056.
